Srinagar, Mar 1: A news story has been doing rounds in various sections of print media in connection with the construction of Transit Accommodation for Kashmiri Migrants in the Valley spreading incorrect information regarding the ongoing construction works, an official spokesman said Tuesday.

In the initial phase, the private land was to be acquired for the construction of these Transit Accommodations. However, due to cost escalation and time constraints of the land acquisition process, a decision was taken in 2019 to acquire State Land with an aim to speed up the construction work, he said.

It is imperative to mention here that around 920 Kanals of land have been identified/transferred to the department of DMRRR at 19 locations for the construction of Transit Accommodations in the Kashmir valley, the spokesman added.

He said that on the directions of Lieutenant Governor, UT of J&K, the construction of Transit Accommodation has been taken up in Mission Mode.

Pertinently, during the winter season, the construction work in Kashmir Division remains suspended between November and the end of February, thus shortening the working season.

The construction work also suffered due to the emergence of the first two Covid-19 waves, whereas during the 3rd Covid -19 wave the work continued at a good pace. Further, Administrative Approval has also been accorded to all the construction works to be carried out at the 19 locations thus paving the way for the completion of construction of these transit accommodations, the spokesman said.

Presently, construction work is in full swing at 07 locations comprising of 1792 units. The work has been allotted in the case of another 384 units. Work allotment is at the final stage in the case of 2360 units. The tendering process has also been initiated in the case of another 1392 units. 76% of construction work at Wandhama Ganderbal, 90% at Sheikhpora Budgam is complete whereas construction work at other locations is also going on in full swing, the spokesman said.

The Government of Jammu and Kashmir is expeditiously working towards the completion of Transit Accommodations so that they are made available to the migrant employees, he added.
