Anantnag: The residents of Qazigund town are up in arms against Municipal Committee Qazigund as street lights in the town are defunct since long now and no effort is being made to replace them, the locals alleged.
The locals complained of faulty street lights causing inconvenience to commuters and pedestrians especially during late hours.
They said that MC had installed street lights in the area a few months ago however, after completion of the job only a few were functional and the rest did not work.
They said the faulty street lights were left unattended by authorities which is causing inconvenience to locals especially in evening hours and wet weather.
“There are many street lights in our area which are defunct. They haven’t been attended to for many months. We took up the issue several times with local municipal officials but nothing has been done so far,” said Mushtaq Ahmad Dar, a local resident.
He said that most of the lights installed in the town are defunct since they were installed as they worked just for few days after being installed but authorities have completely failed to repair them or install new ones.
“Street lights in our town aren’t not working for the past many months, but nobody from the MC Qazigund has visited the area to replace it. In absence of streetlights we are not able to go to Masjid in evening and morning,” said another local.
The locals requested authorities to look into the matter at an earliest and make all defunct lights functional.
Meanwhile, executive officer municipal committee Qazigund Farooq Ahmad claimed that in past few days they are repaired few defunct lights and pending defunct lights will be repaired in coming days.
He said that MC will receive around 1600 more lights which will be installed very soon.
