Water shortage triggers protest in Sopore village

Sopore: The inhabitants of Sher colony and Ningli areas of Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district Saturday staged a protest against Jal Shakti department for failing to provide them regular water supply.
Scores of inhabitants including women assembled and raised slogans against the Jal Shakti department for being provided poor water facility within their respective areas.
“We are facing acute shortage of drinking water for the past many months and the department is forcing us to consume filthy water from other sources,” Fatima, a local resident said.
She said that people are forced to consume filthy and unsafe water from rivers and dirty streams and the residents have been facing many water borne diseases.
She said that they had approached the concerned officials many a times but nothing has been done to their sufferings.
Another protester Farooq Ahmad Dar while blaming and expressing concern over the poor water facility being provided by the Jal shakti department within their areas said that people are facing hardships in this bone chilling winter season.
Meanwhile, an official of the Jal Shakhti Department Sopore said that the issue would be addressed soon.
