Sopore residents aghast over erratic power supply

Sopore: Residents of north Kashmir’s Sopore town in Baramulla district are up in arms against power development department (PDD) for resorting to unwanted power cuts in most of the areas.
The residents of Sopore including Zaingeer belt comprising more than thirty villages alleged that they are facing unscheduled power cuts causing tremendous hardships to the people especially students.
The residents accused the PDD of not adhering to the curtailment schedule.
“We are not getting even 10-12 hours electricity in 24 hours. It is pathetic as we are preparing for various ongoing and upcoming board examinations including JKSSB and other competitive exams. We are not able to study properly as electricity plays hide and seek mostly during night hours,” Mohammad Aazim, one of student from Arampora Sopore said.
“The erratic power supply is more annoying than having no electricity at all,” Showkat Ahmad Malik, a resident of Noor Bagh sopore said. He said that PDD ignoring their sufferings.
“As soon as winter approaches, the electricity starts playing hide and seek here in Sopore town,” he added.
President Beopar Mandal Sopore Haji Muhammad Ashraf Zargar said that, the administration should take immediate notice of the issue instead of forcing us to take to streets.
He said that the business in Sopore town also gets hit due to erratic power supply. We appealed the authorities to look into the matter, he said, adding that protests will be held if the issue is not solved soon.
The situation in Zaingeer belt of Sopore is not different as dozens of villages including Dooru, Dangarpora, Hardushiva, Mundji, Janwara, Warpora, Hathlangoo, Saidpora, Brath kalan and other surrounding areas also complained of erratic and unscheduled power cuts in their respective areas.
They said that electricity plays hide and seek mostly during night hours which also affect the study of students preparing for various examinations.
Meanwhile, an official in the PDD Sopore said the cause of erratic power supply is due to overloading as people use mostly electric heaters, boilers, geysers, which causes automatic breakdown in electricity.
