Week-long training programme concludes at KU
Srinagar, Nov 13: A week-long training programme on ‘Multi-Hazard Risk Management under Changing Climate: Sustaining Economic Development and Livelihood in Western Himalaya’ concluded at the University of Kashmir.
The programme was jointly organised by Department of Geography & Disaster Management, University of Kashmir and National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM), Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India.
Major General M K Bindal, Executive Director NIDM was the chief guest at the valedictory session, in online mode. He emphasised the importance of organising such training programmes and workshops at regular intervals especially in the disaster-prone areas where capacity-building of various stakeholders is of utmost importance. He assured the University of Kashmir, especially the Department of Geography & Disaster Management, that such programmes would be a regular feature with the active support of the NIDM.
Dean Academic Affairs KU Prof Farooq Ahmad Masoodi, who presided over the valedictory session, expressed his satisfaction at successful conduct of the programme. He impressed upon all the participants to carry forward the lessons that they learnt and include the basics of disaster management in their day-to-day lives to enable the society to effectively mitigate the impacts of disasters.
KU Registrar Dr Nisar A Mir, who was the guest of honour on the occasion, congratulated the Department of Geography & Disaster Management and Prof Pervez Ahmed, Programme Coordinator, for successfully conducting the training in offline mode with the active support and assistance from the NIDM. He assured the department that the University would augment its human and infrastructural requirements very soon.
Head, Department of Geography & Disaster Management Prof Shamim A Shah formally welcomed the guests and dignitaries and highlighted the importance of organising such collaborative training programmes with prestigious institutions like NIDM.
Prof Pervez Ahmed presented a comprehensive report of the one-week training programme, which included eight technical sessions.
The training programme was attended by around 100 participants, including officials from from J&K Administrative Dervices, Health Department, Revenue, Forest Department, J&K Police, Civil Defence, Department of Higher Education, University Faculty, Department of Disaster Management & RRR, Department of School Education, Engineers from PWD, Fire & Emergency Services, research scholars and final semester students of disaster management programme.
Eminent resource persons who delivered lectures/live sessions/ demonstrations included Prof M Sultan Bhat, Prof Bikram Singh Bali, Dr Mohammad Shafi Bhat and Dr Akhtar Alam from University of Kashmir, Prof A R Dar from NIT Srinagar, Dr G M Dar from J&K IMPA, Kanhaiya Yogi from NDRF, Dr Riyaz Ahmad Mir from GSI, Waseem Shafi and Mohammad Sohail Wani from Department of Disaster Management & RRR.
Prof Anil K Gupta, Head, ECDRM, NIDM and Fatima Amin, Young Professional from NIDM.
Five participants presented their feedback about the programme, including Sheikh Tariq Ahmed, Nazir Ahmed, Riyaz Ahmad, Dr Syed Ejaz Farid and Er Rahil Nazir.
Dr Javeed A Rather, Senior Assistant Professor DGDM presented a vote of thanks and Dr Akhtar Alam, Assistant Professor, conducted the proceedings of the function.
