Top LeT commander, associate killed in Pampore

Srinagar: A top LeT Commander was among two militants killed in an encounter at Drangal Pampore area of Awantipora in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Saturday, police said.
Inspector General of Police Kashmir Vijay Kumar said that the top LeT Commander Umer Mushtaq Khanday was killed along with his associate in the gunfight.
IGP further said that Umar was involved in killing of two police personnel at Baghat Srinagar on 19th February of this year and was involved in other militancy related crimes.
Umer Mushtaq Khanday a resident of Tulbagh Pampore had gone missing last year in October from his home.
He identified the second militant as Shahid Khurshid, a resident of Chanapora Srinagar.
Kumar said that Shahid was one among the collaborators in the recent civilians in Srinagar.
Shahid is the third city militant killed in last 24 hours, the IGP said.
Both the bodies were retrieved from the debris at the encounter site after 8 hours of searches, he added.
Meanwhile, a police spokesman said that during the intervening night of 15/16 October, based on specific input generated by police regarding presence of militants in Drangbal area of Pampore, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by Police, 50RR and 110Bn CRPF in the said area.
During the search operation, as the presence of militants was ascertained and they were given opportunity to surrender, instead they fired indiscriminately upon the joint search party, which was retaliated leading to an encounter.
In the ensuing encounter, two militants were killed and their bodies were retrieved from the site of encounter.
As per police records, both the killed militants were collaborators in recent killings in City Srinagar and involved in several other terror crimes. Besides, Umer Mushtaq was also involved in the killing of SgCt Mohammad Yousuf and Ct Suhail Ahmad in Baghat area of Srinagar and figured among the list of top 10 most wanted militants. He was also responsible for creating terror among the locals and had been coercing innocent citizens to sympathise with anti-national elements, the spokesman said.
Incriminating materials including arms and ammunition were also recovered from the site of encounter. All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation.
Police has registered a case under relevant sections of law and started investigation in to the matter. People are requested to cooperate with police till the area is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosive materials, if any, the spokesman added.
Pertinently, two militants were killed one each in Pulwama and Srinagar encounter on Friday.
Shahid Bashir of Karfali Mohalla Srinagar was killed in Pulwama who as per police was responsible for killing a PDD employee at Batamaloo.
Whereas Tanzeel Ahmad was killed in Bemina is a resident of HabbaKadal and was involved in killing of probationary Sub Inspector Arshid in Khanyar, police had said.
