Rain damages 4,000 apple boxes at Fruit Mandi Shopian
Traders demand allotment of shops for securing fruit boxes
Shopian: At least four thousand apple boxes were damaged due to rain at Mega Fruit Mandi Shopian last night, reports said.
Mohammad Ashraf, Vice President of the Fruit Mandi Aglar Shopian said that at least four to five thousand apple boxes were damaged due to rain last night.
He said that growers had suffered loss of around 50 lakh rupees as they had kept their produce under open sky.
He added that it rained for just few minutes and it damaged apple boxes worth lakhs.
“If the rain would continue for many hours what will be the amount of damage caused,” Ashraf added.
Mohammad Sultan, a grower said that his 400 apple boxes were damaged due to the rain last night.
He said that despite paying all taxes, government has failed to make any arrangement to avoid losses during bad weather conditions.
Traders said that there is lot of space available to construct shops and allot them to traders but since last several years their demand has not been met so far.
They demanded that government must allot shop sites to the traders so that they can keep the produce in shops safe during bad weather conditions.
Pertinently, the PDP-BJP lead government had laid the foundation of this mega fruit Mandi at Aglar Pinjoora Shopian in 2015.
The Mandi is spread over 200 Kanals of land and project was initiated at an estimated cost of Rs 37.70 crore.
