‘Emerging Role of Pharmacists’: On World Pharmacists Day, KU holds webinar

Srinagar: Kashmir University’s Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences organised a webinar on ‘emerging role of a pharmacist in contemporary times’ to celebrate the World Pharmacists Day.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Talat Ahmad was the chief guest on the occasion.
In his presidential address, Prof Talat urged budding pharmacists to exhibit sincerity, professionalism, empathy and dedication while delivering their services. He outlined the role of qualified pharmacists in ensuring quality, safety and effectiveness of medicines and urged upon them to imbibe proficiency and excellence in their professional life.
Terming pharmacists as the pillars of the healthcare system, Prof Talat emphasised that the pharmacists need to excel in every sphere of their field be it teaching, research, pharmacy practice or pharmaceutical industry.
In his inaugural address, Dean Academic Affairs Prof Farooq Masoodi, who was a guest of honour, called upon pharmacists to rededicate themselves to the service of humanity. He called upon the pharmacy graduates and postgraduates to be competent and proficient in their areas of specialisation and achieve the highest level of expertise to excel at the national and international level.
In her lead lecture, Prof Shobha Rani Hiremath, Dean of Pharmacy, RGUHS, Karnataka talked about the emerging role of pharmacists in drug safety monitoring and pharmacovigilance.
Her talk was followed by a presentation by Dr Zeenat Iqbal, senior faculty at the Department of Pharmaceutics, Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi, wherein she touched upon significant new areas and challenges evolving for the pharmacists as a result of the changing global scenario.
Prof Nahida Tabassum, Dean, School of Applied Sciences and Technology at KU, who was also a guest of honour, highlighted the achievements of the department and the challenges ahead.
Webinar Convener and Head of the Department, Prof Mubashir Hussain Masoodi delivered the welcome address and delineated the existing programmes and future plans of the department.
In his opening remarks, webinar coordinator Prof Geer Mohammad Ishaq elaborated upon the significance of the World Pharmacist Day and the role of International Pharmaceutical Federation in dedicating this day to the pharmacists worldwide since 1912.
Highlighting the importance of this year’s theme “Pharmacy: always trusted for your health”, Prof Geer stated that trust forms the basis of any credible and lasting relationship and to earn trust we need to produce pharmacists who are competent, capable, proficient, knowledgeable, skilled and confident.
