KU holds skill development programme for tribal women
Srinagar: Kashmir University’s Centre for Women Studies and Research (CWSR) launched a skill development training programme for tribal women in Nargistan Aripal area of Tral.
Prof Tabasum Firdous, Director CWSR inaugurated the programme, launched under the aegis of a project sanctioned under RUSA.
She highlighted the growing need for skill development of Kashmiri tribal women and emphasised how such programmes can help uplift the weaker sections of the society.
Stressing on the importance of skill education for generating livelihood opportunities, she said there is a need for developing gender-responsive strategies for skill development of marginalised and poor women in tribal areas.
Prof Firdous said skill development is the key to improve employability and income-earning opportunities and is also vital for sustainable rural development.
“The CWSR took the initiative of providing need-based skill education to the poor and marginalised women of Nargistan Aripal. Such initiatives prepare rural women to work and compete in the formal and informal sectors which in turn will help in alleviating poverty in the district,” she said.
30 women participants are enrolled for the programme.
Dr Roshan Ara, Assistant Professor, CWSR, highlighted the importance of empowerment of tribal women through skill development and training.
“The tribal population of Kashmir and its women continue to be under-represented in formal business training programmes thus limiting their employment options, economic returns and long-term career development,” she said.
Dr Rabiya Bazaz, Dr Basit Naik and Dr Fatima Buchh also spoke on the occasion. Zahid Parwaz Chaudhri facilitated the team to reach out to the tribal women in the area.
