Two civilians, one CRPF trooper injured

Srinagar: An encounter broke out between militants and security personnel on Thursday after the ultras opened fired at a Border Security Force (BSF) convoy in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district, officials said.
The convoy was headed for Srinagar from Jammu when it was attacked, they said.
“Militants opened fire at a BSF convoy on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway at Malpora in the Qazigund area of Kulgam district,” an official said.
“Militants fired upon BSF convey at NHW #Kulgam. No injury reported. However, terrorists trapped,” the Kashmir zone police quoted IGP, Kashmir, Vijay Kumar as saying.
The spokesperson said reinforcements have reached the spot and senior officers of the police, CRPF and the Army were also present there.
Meanwhile, two civilians were injured and as many militants of Lashker-e-Toiba are believed to be trapped Mirbazar in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district, officials said.
Official sources said that two civilians identified as Sahil Yaqoob Bhat (25) son of Mohammad Yaqoob Bhat of Dantar Anantnag and Shahid Farooq Sheikh (22) son of Farooq Ahmed Sheikh of Larm kulgam, suffered injuries in lower abdomen and right thigh respectively at the encounter site. The circumstances under which the injuries were suffered were not immediately known, they said.
Meanwhile, a police officer said that two Lashker-e-Toiba militants have taken shelter in a “huge four-story building” in the area.
“The operation may prolong,” the officer said.
Police in a tweet said that two security forces personnel and two civilians were injured from militants’ fire.
“Two trapped (militants) of LeT still alive. Exchange of fire on. 2 SFs personnel & 2 civilians injured from (militants) fire. Taking all precautions for lesser collateral damage as target building is huge one,” IGP Kashmir said in a tweet.
Meanwhile, a top police officer said that “the operation may prolong,” the officer said.
IGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar and General Officer Commanding of Victor Force, Major General Rashim Bali have reached Mirbazar and were supervising the operation at the spot.
One of the two security force personnel was injured in initial phase of the gunfight. Identified as Umesh Singh son of Prabu Singh of Jharkhand, he along with other trooper whose identity was not immediately known have been hospitalized. The encounter had ensued after militants attacked a BSF convoy on Jammu Srinagar Highway at Mirbazar. (with inputs from GNS)
