Strike by sweepers affects garbage collection service in Sopore
Sopore: Sweepers of Municipal Council Sopore on Monday staged a protest demonstration demanding to depute all 155 sweepers for their duties, who are working in the town.
According to reports, the sweepers who are on strike from last five days staged a peaceful protest at Iqbal park here in Sopore town and later marched towards Chief Executive Officer (ADC’s office Sopore) to submit a memorandum.
Speaking to media the protesters said that if 155 sweepers are working in the department then why only 106 sweepers were on their daily jobs in streets and localities and the rest 49 sweepers are nowhere to be seen.
“Only 106 sweepers out of total 155 are performing their duties while the rest 49 sweepers who are not attending their regular duties are getting salaries from the department,” said sweepers association president Khazir Mohammad.
Locals told that the strike of sweepers has created a mess in Sopore town where heaps of garbage can be seen along road sides and in localities everywhere from past five days.
They said that no garbage was lifted from the designated points due to the ongoing strike.
When contact chief executive officer Municipal council Sopore said that the issue with the sweepers has been resolved and they will resume their duties from Tuesday.
