Kulgam: Residents of Khandaypora area in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Tuesday staged a protest and accused Jal Shakti department of supplying them contaminated water.
The protestors accused the department for taking their pleas lightly since last December and leaving part of the area in their locality without water.
“We are being supplied with contaminated water due to which several people in the area are suffering from various diseases,” Abdul Hameed, a local resident said.
He said that water is being supplied through the pipe lines which were installed some 40 years back.
“They have become rusty, while as at many places they are leaking due to which other dirt is also getting mixed with the water,” he added.
Locals said that they have made several requests to the concerned authorities regarding the supply of clean water in the area but the higher authorities are not taking their requests seriously.
They once again requested higher ups to look into the matter and take immediate step so that the area will get potable water supply.
Javaid Ahmad, Assistant Executive Engineer Jal Shakti Department said that before launch of Jal Jeevan Mission a scheme was approve under NABARD for the area which is near completion.
He acknowledged that pipes are rusty in the area, however, he added that people of the area are using water of spring which may be contaminated due to which people may be suffering from water borne diseases.
He added that scheme will be completed soon after which the entire area will get potable water.
