NC councillor Masrat Kar elected new chairperson MC Sopore
Sopore: Masarat Kar, a National Conference councillor was elected as chairperson of the Municipal Council Sopore on Saturday by a margin of 06 votes against her nearest rival of the People’s Democratic Party.
According to details the NC councillor, Masarat Kar defeated her opponent of PDP, Irfan Ali by a margin of 06 votes.
As per the details out of total 18 councillors, 12 voted in favour of Masarat while her opponent polled only 06 votes.
On the occasion, Masarat while thanking the councillors for electing her said that she will try to work for the development and betterment of Sopore town.
” I along with the entire team of Municipal council Sopore including concillors, will ensure that will provide better civic facilities into the town and our focus will be to provide proper sanitation besides neat and clean atmosphere to the town residents,” said Masarat.
Notably, the post of chairperson MC council Sopore fell vacant after majority of the councillors moved a no-confidence motion against former chairperson, Abdul Ahad Dar in January this year.

The elections for the 13 vacant wards of Municipal council Sopore were held in December 2020 and national conference bagged 10 seats while 2 independent candidates and a PDP candidate also registered their victory.
Pertinently, two councilors Riyaz Ahmad Pir and Shams-U-Din Pir and PSO of another councilor Shafqat Nazir Khan were killed in a militant attack this year in March during a meeting of councilors at Sopore.
