Suicides continue to be reported in Kashmir

Srinagar: Kashmir valley continued to report suicides on Saturday as two people died while as a minor was saved by timely action by police officials while she was attempting suicide, reports said.
They said that a 17-year-old youth committed suicide by jumping into river Jhelum from Cement Kadal in Noorbagh area of Srinagar.
The family members of the youth said that their son identified as Saqib Ahmad Ahangar, son of Abdul Kalaam Ahangar of Kupwara jumped into river Jhelum on Friday evening.
Saqib was living as a paying guest in the Kawdara area of Nawa Kadal in Srinagar with his brother and cousin.
The class 11 student has also shot a video before committing suicide and sought forgiveness from his parents for taking this extreme step.
Meanwhile, locals from Noorbagh area said that the Cement Kadal has become a suicide point for the people. “So far, many people have committed suicide by jumping from this bridge.
It is unfortunate that the administration is not taking concrete steps to prevent such incidents. The bridge should at least be fenced so that these incidents can be prevented,” locals said.
In another incident a 28-year-old youth committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance at his home in Bazipora Ajas area of North Kashmir’s Bandipora district.
An official said that the youth (name withheld) consumed some poisonous substance at his residence in Bazipora locality of Ajas on Saturday morning.
“Soon after the incident he was immediately rushed to community health center (CHC) Sumbal for treatment where died,” he said, adding that the reason for the suicide was not immediately known.
The official said that police have registered a case under relevant sections of law and further investigations have been initiated in this regard.
In another such incident police prevented a minor girl from committing suicide in Shalhar Dab area of Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district.
An official said that the police on Friday evening prevented a minor from committing suicide after she was found attempting to jump into river Jhelum near Shalhar Dab village.
He said that after noticing her movement as doubtful, duty officer Shadipora rushed towards her and foiled her suicidal attempt.
“The girl (name with held) was pacified and after proper counseling was handed over to her parents,” he said.
