Right move to empower women
The decision by the Janata Dal (United) to provide 33 per cent of its state committee seats to women is a step in the right direction.
One of the seven state spokespersons, eight of the 29 state vice-presidents, 16 of the 60 state general secretaries, and 44 of the 114 state secretaries are among the 69 women elected to the state unit.
Women have the highest representation in state secretary positions. This is the first time in the country that a political party has allocated one-third of its representation for women. Women have already been given a 33 per cent quota in government employment, a 35 per cent quota in police professions, and a 50 per cent quota in primary teaching positions at panchayat levels in Bihar state.
The decision will empower women while also bolstering calls for a 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and State Assemblies.
