LeT militant killed in Nawgam gunfight: Police

Srinagar: A Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT) militant was killed in an overnight encounter in Wagoora area of Nowgam Srinagar, police said Wednesday.
“During the intervening night of 15 and 16 June, acting on a specific information about presence of (militants) in Wagoora area of Nowgam, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by Police, Army and CRPF in the area,” a police spokesman said in a statement here.
“During the search operation as the presence of militant was ascertained, he was given an opportunity to surrender. However, he fired indiscriminately upon the joint search party, which was retaliated leading to an encounter,” he said.
In the ensuing encounter, he said one militant was killed and his body was retrieved from the site of encounter. He has been identified as Uzair Ashraf Dar of Wandina Melhoora, Shopian.
As per police records, he was part of groups involved in many cases including attack on security forces.
“He was linked LeT outfit,” the spokesman said, adding, “Arms, ammunition and other incriminating materials were recovered from the site of encounter. All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation and to probe his complicity in other (militant cases).”
Sources said one pistol along with a magazine and six rounds besides two grenades have been recovered from Uzair, who was active since January 2.
Meanwhile, the spokesman said that police has registered a case under relevant sections of law and investigation has been initiated into the incident.
