Welcome move to vaccinate persons with disabilities
The step by the Central Government to accept the Unique Disability Identification (UDID) Card as a photo ID when registering for vaccinations on the Co-WIN portal is laudable. The Union Health Ministry has directed States to ensure that the UDID card, which is issued by the Government of India to Persons with Disabilities, contains all necessary information, such as the person’s name, year of birth, gender, and photograph, and meets the criteria for the use of identification in COVID19 vaccination.
In addition, many State governments have launched a special immunisation drive for them. The decision makes it easier for those with disabilities to be vaccinated without having to deal with any hassles. I hope that the authorities in charge make all vaccination centers barrier-free and accessible. This is the need of the hour.
