Encounter starts in Sopore, foreign militant trapped

Sopore, May 04: An encounter broke out between militants and government forces in Nathipora area of North Kashmir’s Sopore on Tuesday.

Reports said that a joint team of Police, Army’s 22RR and CRPF launched a cordon and search operation in Nathipora.

As the joint team of forces approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon the forces, triggering off an gunfight.

Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir zone Vijay Kumar said that the militant involved in killing two councilors is trapped in ongoing Nathipora gunfight.

“One foreign militant involved in killing of two councillors and a policeman, is trapped in the encounter”, said IGP Kashmir in a tweet.

Notably, on March 29, militants attacked the councilors scheduled meeting at Sopore in which a councilor and a policeman died on the spot while another councilor succumbed to injuries at a hospital in Srinagar.

Meanwhile, the entire area has been sealed and fresh reinforcements are being deployed.
