Students stage protest in Sopore, seek admission in College

Sopore: Hundreds of students who have recently cleared the class 12th board exams held a protest against higher education department alleging that they are unable to get admission in the degree college Sopore.
The students from different areas of north Kashmir Sopore town assembled outside the college and staged a protest to press for their demands. The students blocked the road for an hour.
The protesting students were shouting slogans against the authorities and demanded admission in the college.
The protesting students said that they are not getting admission in the 1st semester this year as the college authorities say that no vacancies are available for intake of students from catchment areas of town.
“We have been visiting the college from last two weeks to get admission for the first semester but we are being told that the intake capacity has been exhausted as of now,” Mohammad Aamir, a protesting student said.
He said that their career is at stake and their precious time is getting wasted.
The students from catchment areas of Main town Sopore were seen protesting against authorities for denying them admission in the college. The students demanded resolving the issue so that their precious time is saved.
“Every year more than 1500 students from four higher secondary schools in Sopore pass their 12th examination and then they are given admission in the Sopore Degree college for pursuing various courses,” said a teacher, wishing not to be named.
He said that this year only 800 students were admitted in Sopore Degree College in different streams.
When contacted, Principal Degree College Sopore, Farooq Ahmad Malik, said that this year only 800 students were provided admission in the college.
“We have been allotted only 800 seats by higher education department for this session and all those seats have been filled,” he added.
He said that till further orders from the higher education department they cannot take any more admission in the college.
