Since the past many months now the most talked about issue in Jammu and Kashmir has been creation of jobs and avenues of employment for the young population. The administration has also been promising jobs for the educated youth and even some 50 thousand jobs were promised to the youth last year.
However, the pace and rhythm which should have followed the promises made is missing and only few hundred job opportunities have been created during the past several months which has led to dejection among the youth.
Though the Centre had taken an initiative last month when it asked the government of Jammu & Kashmir to undertake the process of recruitment in an accelerated manner.
In an action taken report submitted to a parliamentary panel the Ministry of Home Affairs had apprised the panel that the government of Jammu and Kashmir has been asked to assess the requirement of manpower and undertake the process of recruitment in an accelerated manner.
It has also informed the panel that domicile has been made a basic eligibility for an appointment to any post under the Union Territory of J&K or under a local or other authority (other than Cantonment Board) within the UT of J&K.
Jammu and Kashmir has been subject to various issues since the past several years now which include a long list of unemployed and able bodied people sitting idle and having nothing to do. Most of the able bodied men and women here have been left wanting for employment due to the various situations which include lack of avenues and resources.
Presently, the region has around six lakh unemployed educated youth who have been left wondering owing to lack of employment opportunities. Therefore, providing gainful employment to the youth has to be a top most priority.
The present dispensation has also announced 50k jobs for the unemployment youth in the government sector alone, but it seems that the promise will take quite long to see that they are kept.
Now that the ratio of unemployed youth seems to be quite high, the government’s attention should have been focused on promoting entrepreneurship and private sector investment at various levels. This would have immediately changed the situation as job creation and recruitment process takes far more less time in the private sector and the youth could have felt some breather.
Besides, to tide over the crisis of unemployment the government as of now needs to extend its canvass that too far beyond its imagination in case it really wants to see an end to the unemployment crisis here. The Covid-19 pandemic has limited the resources for the youth to unparalleled levels. So much so that jobs creation has taken a severe hit in almost all sectors that were otherwise propelling despite many pressures and pulls.
We at this juncture need a policy that is easy to implement and fast paced so that months and years are not lost seeking approvals and asking for funds release. Our agricultural, horticulture and some emerging sectors can prove to be an alternative that can help the government to provide a remedy to unemployment issues.
