Anantnag: It has been more than two years that the traffic signal lights installed at a cost of lakhs of rupees have been lying defunct in main town Anantnag, locals alleged.
To avoid frequent traffic jams and to ensure observance of traffic rules, the district administration had installed traffic signal lights at busy Khanabal and Jangalat Mandi Chowk in Anantnag two years back but these traffic lights have not been made functional since then.
Locals said that Khanabal and Jangalat Mandi Chowk are the busiest intersections in the town where traffic jams are frequent due to heavy movement of vehicles.
They said signal lights were installed at a cost of millions to improve the traffic system, which was also experimentally restored after being inaugurated by the district administration two years ago, but only a few days later signal lights became disabled and were never restored since then.
Although the signal lights are visible on the poles, they are only nominal, not useful, said Arif Ahmad a local resident of Janglat Mandi, adding that due to disabled signal lights, the traffic authorities have to deploy staff at the said places, who are working to facilitate the movement of traffic.
He said that if signal lights will be restored it will help a lot in fixing traffic jam in the area and commuters will also feel a sigh of relief.
Commuters as well as locals requested authorities to restart traffic signal lights in the area so that they won’t face frequent traffic jams on daily basis.
Concerned deputy superintendent of Traffic Rukhsar Sofi, when contacted said that the responsibility of fixing the signal lights lies with the municipal authorities as the municipal committee had installed these lights, however, he claimed that in this regard, he has informed the concerned authorities and soon the traffic signal lights will be activated.
