Much to the delight of the border residents and the people in general, India and Pakistan yet again vowed to keep peace among themselves as the two arch rivals agreed to strictly observe all agreements on ceasefire along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir and other sectors.
A joint statement issued in Islamabad and New Delhi said the Director Generals of Military Operations of the two countries held discussions over the established mechanism of hotline contact and reviewed the situation along the LoC. The military officials said that in the interest of achieving mutually beneficial and sustainable peace along the borders, the two DGMOs agreed to address each other’s core issues and concerns which have propensity to disturb peace and lead to violence.
The two sides also reiterated that existing mechanisms of hotline contact and border flag meetings will be utilised to resolve any unforeseen situation or misunderstanding.
Though India and Pakistan signed a ceasefire agreement in 2003, but it has hardly been followed in letter and spirit over past several years with more violations being witnessed than observance of the pact.
The hostility over the years has meant endless difficulties for the people in Jammu and Kashmir. Not only is human life lost but the property of these border residents too is at stake once the fragile peace is shattered with the loud bangs of shells and gunfire.
The antagonistic stands adopted by the two nations also lead to instability in the entire south Asian region with many small nations asking the two major players to be at peace for the good of the region.
Interestingly, the two nations are the main players in South Asian politics, as the two constitute 86% of its population and control over 80% of the land area. When these two are at peace with each other the whole region by and large witnesses calm and when their relations witness a troubled phase, the entire region remains on tenterhooks.
Peace has been elusive to the region because of hostilities between India and Pakistan over the past three decades now. Both the nations have been fighting it out in the open and after the Pulwama attack when 40 CRPF personnel lost their lives in a massive blast, the relations between the two have witnessed further slide.
Both India and Pakistan are faced with numerous issues including that of providing a better life for the people. Most of the people in the two nations are living under difficult situation as the twin nations are faced with many issues at hand.
The complicacies prevalent in both the nations prevent them from providing a better standard of life and better job options to their citizens who are living much below the desired standards. This stands true for residents of both the nations and it is the people who are made to pay and witness tough times.
Peace is imperative for both nations to witness prosperity and well being of its people. However, over the years the leadership in both the countries has failed to realize this. This being the reason that despite more than seven decades having elapsed since both nations achieved freedom, the standard of growth has been reported abysmally low. The leadership needs to ponder over this. The sooner, the better.
