Shopian residents seek supply of potable water

Pulwama: The residents of over half a dozen villages in Shopian area are up in arms against the Jal Shakti Department for failing to provide drinking water facility to the area.
The residents of Bandpawa, Thokerpora, Chitragam, Malibugh, Dachoo, Alshipora and its adjacent areas said that the areas have been facing shortage of drinking water for the past more than a decade now.
They said that in absence of proper drinking water facility, they are forced to drink contaminated water.
Mohammad Yousuf, a resident of Bandpawa said, “We have dug a well in our own locality and are supplying water to the people of our village”.
He said that they knocked at the doors of authorities several times in this regard but to no avail.
Mushtaq Ahmad, a resident of Thokerpora village said that water pump installed in the area has not been working for the past many years now.
He said that they are forced to drink contaminated water which is taking a toll on their health.
Locals said that they have been moving from pillar to post in order to get their issue redressed but nothing has been done as of now.
They once again requested higher ups to look into the matter and take immediate steps to provide drinking water facility to the area.
Assistant executive engineer PHE sub division Zainapora Parvaiz Ahmad, when contacted said that new water supply plants are being constructed in the area and very soon the entire area will get pure drinking water supply.
