Shopian residents allege overcharging by cab drivers

Shopian: Residents of different areas of Shopian said that cab drivers plying on different routes continue to charge fare according to their will while as the government issues fare charts every year but there is no one to implement them.
Residents said that the cab drivers in Shopian are charging the people according to their will as there are no buses or mini buses plying in Shopian district.
They said that rates fixed by the authorities are not being implemented as there is no will exhibited by the authorities to implement the rates on ground.
“We have seen rate lists being issued every year and even twice a year but driver don’t abide by it,” said Waqar Ahmad ,a resident of Imamsahib, adding that only issuing rate list is not enough but there is need to implement it on ground.
He said that drivers often misbehave with passengers besides that dozens of underage youth are running cabs without licenses and other documents but there is none to check it.
“There are dozens of Sumo stands in the district but only few are registered and wishes establishes a cab stand wherever they wish,” Aijaz Ahmad, another local resident said.
Locals said that despite bringing this issue into the notice of concerned authorities umpteen times the officials assure action but fail to implement their orders.
They once again requested higher ups to the look into the matter and implement the rate list that has been issued several times.
