Water scarcity sparks protest in Rafiabad village

Sopore: Alleging failure of Jal Shakti (PHE) Department in providing adequate water supply, the residents of Yarbugh village in Rafiabad area of North Kashmir’s Baramulla district held a protest demonstration on Thursday.
The protestors, mostly women came out on the main road carrying pitchers and buckets and raised slogans against the Jal Shakti Department and District administration. The protestors later blocked the Rafiabad Dangiwacha road for several hours.
They alleged that they are suffering due to shortage of regular supply of drinking water to their area since last many months.
“Many a times the issue was brought into the notice of the concerned authorities, but nothing has been done till date to redress our grievance,” Nazir Ahmad Peer, one of the aggrieved protester said.
The protesters alleged that government had sanctioned pipes and other equipment to enhance water supply lines to their village but these equipments and pipes vanished without leaving a trace.
The protestors blocked the road and demanded regular supply of drinking water to their area. They sought intervention of higher ups to mitigate their sufferings.
Meanwhile, an official of the Jal Shakti department Rafiabad said that some supply pipes have witnessed damages due to frost and it will take at least three days for the officials of the department to get them in place and restore drinking water supply to the village.
