Anantnag residents decry water shortage, stage protest

Anantnag: Residents of Anantnag district on Saturday staged protest against the PHE department for failing to provide drinking water supply to the area.
The villagers of Donipawa in Achabal belt of Anantnag blocked Achabal-Anantnag road and shouted slogans against the PHE department.
Locals said that they are not getting portable water since the past ten days now and the officials of the PHE department are not addressing the issue.
The protestors said that they have been facing lot of problems due to the immense shortage of drinking water and despite several reminders to the officials, no action is being taken to redress the grievance.
“We informed the concerned authorities several times in the regard but their assurances proved hoax on ground,” they said.
They once again requested higher ups including DDC Anantnag to look into the matter and provide scheduled water supply to the area.
The protest and the road blockade lead to a huge traffic jam on the vital due to which various passengers also faced inconvenience.
Meanwhile, a team of officials visited the spot who pacified the protestors and assured them that the issue will be addressed after which the protest was called off.
An official of the PHE department said that due to frost and severe winter conditions prevailing in the region people are facing problems as the pipelines have got frozen.
He said that despite this the officials are working day and night to provide drinking water to the residents of the area.
