Pulwama village without drinking water facility, locals stage protest
Pulwama: Residents of Draklaran Abhama village in Rajpora belt of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Monday staged a protest against PHE department for failing to provide drinking water to the area.
Locals said that the PHE department has laid a 1ich diameter pipeline to provide drinking water facility to around 500 households.
“This pipe does not have the capacity to carry water for 500 households and as such most of the residents do not get tap water,” a local resident said.
He said that in this chilling winter, they are forced to go to different areas to fetch drinking water from nearby nallahs which not only is contaminated, but consumes their lot of energy and time.
“Water borne diseases have spread several times in the area but there is none to take care of the issue,” said Nisar Ahmad, a local resident.
He said that from last 10 days they haven’t received even a single drop of water and the people have been left suffering.
“We have been deprived of drinking water since October and as a result people consume water from local stream, which is not fit for drinking,” said another local.
“Our women go in bone chilling cold and bring pots filled with water and later we consume that only,” he said.
“We have been knocking the doors of higher authorities since last one decade but their repeated assurances have proved hoax as the situation has not changed on ground,” the locals said.
They once again requested authorities to look into the matter and provide drinking water facilities to the area at an earliest.
Despite repeated attempts, the concerned Executive Engineer and the Assistant Executive Engineer did not respond to the calls from this reporter.
