Two ‘intruders’ shot dead along IB in Punjab

Srinagar/Amritsar: A militant was arrested in an injured condition during an encounter with security forces in Anantnag district of south Kashmir on Thursday, police said. Militants also attacked security forces in Awantipora and Bijbehara.
Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Baba Gund Khaleel area in Anantnag district following information about presence of militants there, a police official said.
He said the search operation turned into an encounter after militants opened fire on the security forces.
One militant was arrested by the security forces in an injured condition and rushed to SMHS hospital here, the official said.
He said the arrested militant, who sustained bullet injury in the abdomen, was identified as Zaheer Abbas Lone, a resident of Pulwama district.
Meanwhile, suspected militants fired upon security forces in Kadibal area of Awantipora.
A senior police officer said that militants fired upon joint forces of Police and CRPF from a distance, however no loss of life or injury was reported in the incident.
Soon after the attack forces launched a manhunt to nab the attackers, however, the militants had escaped from the area.
In another incident militants hurled a grenade on a CRPF party in Bijbehera injuring a trooper.
A police official said that militants lobbed a grenade towards a CRPF party near Bijbehara hospital. The blast left a CRPF man injured. “The injured CRPF man was shifted to SDH Bijbehara where his condition is stable,” the official said.
He identified the injured CRPF man as Patil Parmakar of 40 battalion of CRPF.
He said that entire area was cordoned off and a massive search operation was launched to track down the attackers.
Meanwhile, two Pakistani “armed intruders” were shot dead by the Border Security Force along the International Border in Punjab as the force thwarted three bids of drugs smuggling at this front.
In the first interception, two men in their 30s were killed near the Rajatal border post in Amritsar around 2:20 am after the troops on guard detected suspicious movement ahead of the border fence in Indian territory, a BSF spokesperson said.
“The Border Security Force (BSF) sentry on duty heard some crawling sound near the fence. He challenged the approaching people in dense fog but he instead heard the sound of cocking the gun by the intruders.
“The BSF jawan fired in self defence and later we recovered two bodies of the armed intruders from the spot,” BSF Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Bhupinder Singh told reporters in Amritsar.
An AK-56 rifle, semi-automatic rifle, pistol, 90 bullets, five magazines and two PVC pipes, usually used to push drug packets across the border, of about ten feet each, have been seized after a search was conducted of the incident site, the DIG said.
No drugs were found in this spot, he added.
The officer said the force is “lodging a protest” with the Pakistan Rangers to inform them that the intruders were using their territory to push narcotics on the Indian side.
He said two more attempts to smuggle drugs were thwarted in the same region, one being near its Ramkot border post, and over 5 kgs of heroin in total was recovered from two different spots along the Amritsar sector. (with inputs from PTI)
