Anantnag: The residents of Kamad Village in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district are up in arms against the Public Health Engineering department for failing to provide drinking water to the residents.
Locals said that they are facing lot of problems due to scarcity of drinking water in the area from last several years now.
They said that despite repeated requests to the concerned authorities, nobody is bothered to look into the issue and no measures are being taken to end the hardships faced by the people.
Shabir Ahmad, a local resident said that after spending crores of rupees on water supply scheme in the area, it is lying defunct due to which there is shortage of water supply in the area.
“We are forced to cover a distance of around one kilometer to fetch drinking water from tube wells,” he said, adding that the water brought from the tube wells is not fit for consumption and people are falling sick due to its use.
Locals said that the test bore dug by the PHE department recently was gushing out water full of slit as it seems that this scheme will also fail like the older ones.
They requested higher ups to look into the matter and provide drinking water facility to the area immediately so that locals can heave a sigh of relief.
On contacting concerned Executive Engineer, Mohammad Haneef, he said that clean water was collected from the well which was dug recently and there is need of an OST now for what we have already informed the district administration.
He said that very soon we will get the land and accordingly the scheme will be made functional.
