Bear barges into cowshed, kills sheep in Handwara

Handwara: A bear created havoc by killing ten sheep in Drungoosa Village of Mawer area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara District on the intervening of Tuesday-Wednesday, locals said.
According to the local resident a bear entered into the cowshed of Mohammed Maqbool Chopan, Abdul Ahad Chopan and Nazir Ahmad Pir last night and killed ten sheep belonging to the trio.
The effected families have appealed authorities to compensate them against the loss and said that the cattle are their only source of income.
They also said fear has gripped among the residents and have appealed Wildlife department to trap the bear at an earliest.
A wild life officer also confirmed the killing of the sheep in the bear attack and said due to the recent snowfall the wild animals have started moving towards residential areas in search of food.
He however, appealed people living near forest areas to keep vigil while moving outside their homes.
The officer further said that a team of wild life officials will be sent to area to trap the bear.
