Srinagar-Leh road thrown open for LMV’s

Ganderbal/Srinagar: The Srinagar-Leh Highway was thrown open for Light Motor Vehicles (LMV’s) on Saturday after remaining closed for five days due to snow and slippery road conditions.
An official said that the highway has been thrown open for one way traffic and today vehicles were allowed to move towards Kargil from Sonmarg. He said only LMV’s were being allowed to ply on the road while heavy motor vehicles are still stranded on either side of the Highway.
The official said that due to accumulation of snow on the road, slippery road conditions still persist. He said anti skid chains are being used to gain more grip on the slippery road.
Pertinently, traffic on the highway was suspended on Monday morning after heavy snowfall at Zojila pass, Sonamarg, Zero point, Meenmarg and Drass.
Meanwhile, weather will remain dry across Jammu and Kashmir till Thursday, a MeT official said Saturday.
He said the temperatures especially during the night have dropped considerably.
The MeT official said that Kashmir capital Srinagar recorded minus 2.2 as the minimum temperature while Pahalgam recorded minus 5.2 and Gulmarg recorded minus 5.6. The temperature in Kargil was recorded at minus 9.2.
Leh witnessed minus 12.9 degrees Celsius.
The MeT official said that temperatures have dropped in Kashmir due to clear night sky. He said weather will remain dry across Jammu and Kashmir till Thursday. (KNT)
