It is welcome to note that the Punjab Government has approved a new scheme — ‘Punjab Divyangjan Sashaktikaran Yojana’ (PDSY) to empower differently-abled persons in a phased manner across the state.
The first stage of the scheme will involve strengthening the existing programs to ensure that their benefits reach the persons with disabilities in a more effective manner, while in the second phase 13 new interventions are proposed to be undertaken for the empowerment of such persons.
The PDSY aims to fill the backlog of persons with disabilities in government jobs and a barrier-free environment for persons with disabilities by making government and public centric buildings, public transportation, and websites accessible to them. A consultative group would review the performance under the scheme and also suggest measures for improvement.
The need of the hour is that all government and private authorities must execute the provisions of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPWD) Act, 2016 and ensure a disabled-friendly environment, full participation in society, and equal opportunities for the differently-abled community.
