Clear our liabilities first, demand contractors associated with R&B

Srinagar: Contractors in Roads and Buildings Department are up in arms and demand clearance of pending liabilities after, the Principal Secretary to the Government, R&B Department accorded sanction to the transfer of 365 roads in the municipal limits of Srinagar city to the Srinagar Municipal Corporation.
Moreover, the Government has accorded sanction to the transfer of City Roads Division Srinagar to Srinagar Municipal Corporation along with the posts.
“R&B owes Rs 80 Crores to us and Rs 300 Crores to the owners of Hot Mix Plants. It has transferred roads above 12 feet to SMC but didn’t bother to clear our liabilities,” Ghulam Jeelani Purza, Chairman Jammu Kashmir Coordination Committee, said.
He said the decision to transfer roads above 12 feet is erroneous.
“R&B should handover roads for macadamization which are below 12 feet and where vehicles don’t pass,” he said.
Ghulam Jeelani Purza said that recent order from the government will make them suffer as it will change things on ground. “Clear our liabilities first and then only transfer roads to SMC,” he said.
Besides roads, hundreds of posts of the R&B Department in City Roads Division Srinagar have also been transferred to the Municipal Corporations. However, Roads and Buildings Department will continue to be the cadre controlling authority and the staff transferred to the Municipal Corporations will be considered as on deputation.
When contacted, an official from R&B said that the transfer had become inevitable after the abrogation of Article 370 as 74th Amendment of the Constitution of India has come into force.
He said liabilities of contractors will be cleared shortly. (KNT)
