Water scarcity triggers protest in Sopore

Sopore: Scores of inhabitants including women from Bagh-e-Rehmat bypass of Sopore area in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Thursday staged a protest against Jal Shakti department for ‘failing’ to provide them regular water supply.
The protesters assembled and blocked the bypass road Sopore, affecting the traffic movement for several hours.
The protesters said that the residents are facing water shortage since last many years and department is forcing them to drink contaminated water from open streams and ponds.
Shahzada, one of the protesters said that they approached the concerned officials many times but nothing has been done in this regard.
“We are being forced to drink contaminated water, which has affected our health,” she said.
Meanwhile, when contacted officials of Jal Shakti Department Sopore said R&B department has damaged the main water supply pipe fixed providing water supply to the area.
He further said that the grievances of the people will be resolved soon as the department will come up with a separate water supply line towards the locality so that their sufferings will come to an end.
