Jammu, Nov 2: terming the old land laws as redundant and regressive, the government on Monday said that the laws were anti-people.

Addressing reporters in Jammu, Rohit Kansal, Principal Secretary and government’s spokesman said that the old land laws system of Jammu & Kashmir maybe appropriate when introduced but was essentially meant to serve a rural and agrarian economy.

“They became obsolete when looked at as a whole. These laws suffered from redundancies and were regressive anti-people. So there was a need to clean the system and give a set of simple land laws to prevent unnecessary litigation and discretionary interpretation,” he said.

“As we know any such interpretation leaves scope for vested interests to operate so the need was felt to change some laws,” he said.

He said that 11 laws have been repealed and the new laws leave no scope for any misgivings and confusion.
