Anantnag: With number of vehicles increasing with every passing day, the traffic management is becoming a daunting task for the authorities in main Town Bijbehara in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
The mismanagement of the traffic and callous attitude of drivers and commuters has left Bijbehara in continued mess, often causing inconvenience to the people.
The sick, old and children become the worst sufferers as all routes leading to Anantnag and Srinagar often remain clogged with traffic, said a local.
“From 9 am to 7 pm you can see traffic jam on every road in Bijbehara however authorities aren’t paying any heed towards the issue,” he said.
“Vendors and shopkeepers display their products on the pavement, public walk on the streets, traffic police fails to implement traffic rules. If all of us obey rules, the problem can be solved to a large extend,” Mushtaq Ahmad, another local said.
Traffic jam remains so heavy that even ambulances get stuck in jams for hours but there is no one to take cognizance of the issue.
Locals demanded that movement of heavy motor vehicles should be restricted during the day time through the town so that traffic jams can be reduced.
They said main roads have been encroached at many places in main town but authorities have failed to take action against the encroachers due to which the traffic jam is increasing day by day in the area.
On contacting Tehsildar Bijbehara, Reyaz Ahmad Shah, he said that he has been receiving many complaints and a meeting in this regard will be conducted will all officials and locals after that steps for the welfare of general public will be taken.
