Srinagar/Ganderbal: An army vehicle Wednesday crushed a Scooty rider to death outside Badami Bagh Army Headquarters here in Summer Capital Srinagar. The pillion rider sustained critical injuries and has been shifted to hospital. In another mishap another two wheeler rider suffered critical injuries after he was hit by an army vehicle in Ganderbal.
The death of the rider sparked protest while protesters demand stern action against the erring army driver.
Witnesses said that a Scooty bearing registration number (JKO1AD-0992) was hit by an army vehicle near Tank at BadamiBagh cantonment in Srinagar.
They said that the youth died on the spot while pillion rifer identified as Abdu Hamid Mir from Zewan area of Srinagar outskirts was shifted to hospital. Police identified the slain as Muhammad Ashraf Sheikh son of Ghulam Muhammed Sheikh, resident of Zewan bala Later people blocked the local road and staged a protest demanding action against the army official driving vehicle which led to the accident.
People raised slogans against army and termed the death of youth as cold blooded murder’. “This is naked oppression,” people were seen talking on a video that went viral after the accident.
A police officer from Ram Manshibagh police station confirmed the incident saying a team of police rushed to the spot and pacified the angry protestors assuring them action against the Army driver.
Meanwhile, protests erupted in Hariganiwan area of Kangan in Ganderbal district after an Army vehicle hit a Pedestrian on Srinagar-Leh highway.
Reports said that Mohammad Maqbool Khan (65) son of Mohammad Ramzan Khan a Resident of Hariganiwan was hit by an Army vehicle near at main market Hariganiwan.
He was critically injured in the incident and was immediately rushed to SDH Kangan where from he was referred to SKIMS Soura for specialized treatment, reports added.
Soon after the incident, locals stage protest and blocked Srinagar-Leh road demanding action against the driver. (with inputs from KNT)
