Lack of ‘basic amenities’ triggers protest in Sopore village
Sopore: Scores of residents including women hailing from Saidpora area of Zaingeer belt in north Kashmir’s Sopore took to streets on Tuesday morning and staged a protest against water and electricity crisis in the area.
Reports said that the protesters staged a sit-in and blocked the Sopore-Dangarpora bypass road which affected the traffic movement. The protesters said that they are facing immense hardships as the locals are facing water shortage since last two years and authorities hardly bother to look into this grave issue.
They said that their village has been grappling with shortage of potable water since many years now and the requests by the locals to ease their woes have not been taken seriously.
Meanwhile, a protesting youth, identified as Bilal Manzoor said that the locals approached the officials of the Jal Shakti department many times but nothing was done to mitigate their woes.
He said that we are forced to drink contaminated water and many people in the village have fallen ill.
The protesters also alleged that the area also witnesses frequent power cuts. The aggrieved protesters however threatened to go for bigger protest if the issues are not resolved at an earliest.
