Finally, the United Nations seems to have taken a stand on important issues that the world body faces in view of the criticism it has faced by siding with the mighty and powerful nations and shedding its responsibility on various significant issues.
The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has conveyed to the United States that the UN will not support reimposing sanctions on Iran as the US has been demanding. The UN Chief has sought a go ahead on the issue only after a Security Council nod.
The Trump administration had declared last week that all UN sanctions against Iran have been restored, a move most of the rest of the world rejects as illegal and is likely to ignore. The US announcement is certain to cause controversy during the UN’s annual high-level meetings of the General Assembly which is being held mainly virtually this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The US announcement came 30 days after Pompeo notified the council that the administration was triggering snapback because Iran was in significant non-performance with its obligations under the accord, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action or JCPOA.
But the overwhelming majority of members in the 15-nation council call the US action illegal because President Donald Trump pulled the United States out of the plan in 2018.
They point to Security Council Resolution 2231, which endorsed the nuclear agreement. It states that a JCPOA participant state can trigger the snapback mechanism. The US insists that as an original participant it has the legal right, even though it ceased participating.
The stand taken by the UN chief of negating the US approval comes in the backdrop of silence maintained by the Security Council on the US stand. The SC has taken no action subsequent to the receipt of the letter of the US secretary of state; neither have any of its members or its president.
Since the majority of council members have written to the council president to the effect that the letter did not constitute a notification that snapback was triggered, the members have indicated that they were not in a position to take any action in regard to this matter.
The US action is once again displaying aggression owing to its might and control over some of the decisions that the world body like the UN has been taking on some crucial issues. But, this time round the expectations of the US seem to have hit a wall.
This leaves the US to use its domestic authorities to impose further sanctions on Iran and ensure that the gulf nation does not reap the benefits of UN-prohibited activity.
The UN decision of not getting involved with the US over its Iran sanctions clearly indicates that US has been left alone by its European allies as well.
The rejection of the US position could push the Trump administration, which has already withdrawn from multiple UN agencies, organisations and treaties, further away from the international community, isolating it further.
