Says Admin caught off guard as floods wreck havoc across Jammu

In a statement issued here former party legislators Surinder Choudhary and Firdous Tak said that despite a routine exercise for the administration to prepare itself for the monsoon seasons, this year the government machinery was caught completely off guard leading to loss of human lives and property.
“Several people lost their lives and severe damage was caused to the public and government property across the region as the regional administration failed to prepare despite warnings from the weather department”, the statement read.
The PDP leaders said that while even in Jammu, the winter capital of erstwhile state, flash floods in various seasonal nallahs led to the damage of public property in the adjoining localities. The roads in most of the city were submerged in rainwater due to the non-availability or blockade of drainage system, while the overflowing nahallas caused serious damage to the roads in the outskirts of the city.
Several residential areas, they said, remained clogged with water causing loss and inconvenience to the inhabitants.
They said that reports of human loss and damage to the property were also pouring in from other districts of the region and the administration has to fix responsibility for lapses and dereliction.
“There was an urgent need to mobilize official men and machinery on ground in all the hilly districts of the region in order to avoid further damage”, they said while urging the divisional administration to act on a war footing in this regard.
The leaders also sought an immediate assessment of losses caused to the general masses including farmers for processing the same for compensation.
