Srinagar: Chief Engineer, Irrigation, Flood and Control, Kashmir, Iftikhar Ahmed Kakroo said that chances of any floods due to the continuous downpour across Kashmir are very less.
He said due to long dry spell water level in rivers had already decreased and as of now there is no flood threat. Kakroo said that water level at Sangam is receding and below the danger mark.
He said the water level in Sangam is 7.20 and if it touches 14 ft, we will issue flood alert and when it crosses 21 mark, then we announce danger level.
Kakroo said RM Bagh shows the gauge reading as 9.64 while the danger mark is put at 18. At Asham the water level is 6.28, while the danger mark is 14 ft.
He said the department is alert and monitoring the situation.
“We are in touch with weather office and the information we have received that rain will stop on Thursday evening. If weather forecast proves accurate, everything will be normal and no flood like situation may emerge,” he said.
Meanwhile, a MeT official said that here are chances that minor flash floods may hit some parts of Kashmir Valley but there is no possibility of major floods.
“There can be landslides in sloppy areas, flash flood, and water logging in low lying areas. People are requested to remain calm but vigilant, prepared and not to spread rumours about flood,” he added.
He said that looking at the forecast, the threat of a major flood is highly unlikely but nevertheless, it is always good to be prepared.
Reports said that though the water level at Sangam is below the danger mark and receding but water level in Vishu and Liddar Nallh is increasing. The water level is constant at Ranbiara and other nallahs.
An official from administration said that they hope water levels will recede once rain stops.
He said they were assessing the problem of water logging.
“Mechanical and engineering departments have started dewatering the affected areas,” the official added.
Reports said that many areas are water logged while the bitter experience of 2014 floods are prompting people to be prepared in advance. (KNT)
