3 militants killed in two encounters

Srinagar: A militant was killed in an encounter with security forces in Shopian district of south Kashmir on Wednesday, police said. Meanwhile, two militants were reported killed in an encounter in north Kashmir’s Handwara area.

Based on specific inputs about the presence of militants in Chitragam village of south Kashmir district, security forces launched a cordon and search operation there, a police official said.

He said the search operation turned into an encounter after the militants fired on a search party of the forces, who retaliated.

In the ensuing exchange of fire, one militant was killed, the official said.

The militant’s identity and group affiliation is yet to be ascertained, he said, adding that the operation is underway.

Meanwhile, two militants have been killed in ongoing operation at Ganipora Kralgund area of Handwara in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

Official sources said that two militant have been killed in initial exchange of firing. He said the identity of the militant is yet to be ascertained.

He further said that gunfight erupted in an orchard as the combing operation continue in the area.

Earlier, a joint team Police, army’s 32 RR and CRPF launched a joint cordon-and-search operation in the area, there was firing upon the team from militants hiding in the area.

The fire was retaliated, triggering of an encounter, they added.

Pertinently, this is the second encounter of the day.(with PTI, GNS inputs)
