Baramulla gunfight: Four forces personnel, three militants killed

Operation suspended due to darkness, cordon continues

Srinagar: Two paramilitary CRPF men, a policeman and an Army jawan, besides three militants including a senior LeT commander were killed in a daylong gunfight in north Kashmir’s Kreeri area of Baramulla district, reports said.

Two CRPF men and an SOG cop were killed after militants attacked a joint naka party at Tindim village of Kreeri in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, officials said Monday.

J&K Director General of Police (DGP) Dilbagh Singh said that the militants fired at the patrolling party of CRPF at Tindim village of Kreeri this morning at around 9:30 am.

“Two CRPF men and a police man sustained serious injuries. However, they succumbed later,” he said while addressing a press conference at police control room Srinagar.

He said that the militants involved in the attack were engaged by the security forces minutes after the attack, triggering a gunfight in the orchards.

A police spokesman said that in the incident three security forces personnel including two CRPF men and a special police officer were killed.

“The slain CRPF men belonged to 119 battalion and were identified as constable Lokesh Sharma and constable Khurshid Khan while slain SPO was identified as Muzaffar Ali.

The spokesman said that the militants were engaged till the area was completely cordoned off with the help of reinforcement and the search was jointly launched by the police army and the CRPF. Today’s attack was second major attack by militants after August 14 when two policemen were killed at Nowgam area of Srinagar.

Meanwhile, defence sources said that an army trooper was killed and another crictically injured in the ongoing encounter.

They said that an army soldier was killed and another critically injured in ongoing operation. The injured army trooper has been shifted to army hospital for treatment, the official said.

They further said that operation has been suspended for night due to darkness and would resume with the first light of day.

As per the sources another commander of LeT is believed to be trapped. (with, GNS inputs)
