The uncertainty and the turmoil going on here in this part of the world since the past three decades has pushed the people here into hopelessness. This assertion in simple terms means that people here jump to cling on to anything that makes them believe that things will change and–change for good.

No wonder then, that people in Kashmir started to believe the poster boy from north Kashmir who tried to get into the shoes of a messiah and rid his people of all the woes and troubles that have come their way since times immemorial.

The people’s belief and unflinching faith made the poster boy, a bureaucrat, at that time to shun his uniform and come out in the open and don a new avatar-that too of a politician and try his luck in politics.

This sort of plot reflected a typical hindi movie script, where the hero jumps into the battle field and within a short span of time manages to defeat all the evil forces and set everything right.

But alas, the script here had everything except a happy ending which the poster boy also failed to comprehend at the time of donning his new avatar. So, what makes the people here in this part of the world to curse or abuse the hero even though he might have failed to achieve what they believed, he might have been be able to.

However, looking at this entire episode with a different camera position, one can also pitch in with a different argument saying that the hero has not failed. Actually it is the people, who have failed in judging him. It is the people here in Kashmir who have on most of the occasions ended up feeling perplexed, deceived and cheated by those who claimed to get them out of the miseries and morass they have got engulfed into.

The reasons can be many, but one thread of continuity in all these episodes has been the people’s blindfolded trust and faith that they put on those who claim to be their saviors.

The latest episode in Kashmir’s history is yet another grim reminder for all of us that we need to change our perception vis-à-vis those who assume or presume to be our leaders. Let us learn to raise questions and seek answers without labeling or cutting people to size who at times try to show a mirror to the masses by informing them about the possible dangers well in time.

Shah Feasal like most of the people in Kashmir reflected nothing but ambitions. Ambitions to grab power and to be at the top. To rule the hapless people here and secure his future. He failed in his objective because what he lacked was vision and foresight. So his failure has made us realize that he did not deserve to lead a nation but he deserved to be a follower.

That is why that a person who tried to be a leader has begged for his role of a follower at the end. Therefore, the moral of the story is that leaders have to lead by example and not crawl when the going gets tough.

This is the reason that Kashmir cannot boast to have produced even a single leader during the past several centuries. Because being a leader doesn’t mean enjoying comfort, position and power alone. Leadership means sacrifice, which unfortunately no one here is willing to offer.
