Rare Soviet-era rifle recovered in Gulmarg

Srinagar: In a rare catch, security forces on Saturday recovered a Dragunov sniper rifle — a Soviet-era weapon — from the upper reaches of Jammu and Kashmir’s Gulmarg during a search operation, a defence spokesman said here.
A search operation was launched today morning based on input regarding presence of weapon cache in the forest area of Marpathri in upper reaches of Gulmarg, Baramulla, Defence Spokesman Col Rajesh Kalia said.
He said one Dragunov sniper rifle with magazines, 194 AK-47 rounds, 10 rifle grenades, and two IED circuits were recovered during the search operation.
Police sources said that a case has been registered in this regard in Police Station Gulamarg. Today’s arms and ammunition recovery comes just two days after army recovered a huge arms cache in Hathlangoo area of Uri in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
Army’s Srinagar-based Chinar-Corps had said in a tweet that an input was received regarding weapon drop near LoC and a search operation was launched after that. The recovered items included one AK-47 rifle with magazines, five Chinese pistols with magazines, 24 grenades and other warlike stores.
Meanwhile, security forces busted a militant hideout of Jaish-e-Muhammad militant outfit and recovered “incriminating material from it” in Tral area of Awantipore in South Kashmir Pulwama district.
Police officials said that on a credible input, a cordon and search operation (CASO) was launched by Awantipora Police, 42 RR and 180 BN CRPF in forest area of Chinphadi, Machama, in Tral area of Pulwama district.
“During the search in the area, the joint team of security forces busted a JeM hideout. The joint team was able to recover incriminating materials from the hideout. The incriminating material has been taken into Police custody for the purpose of investigation,” he said.
Accordingly, police have registered a case FIR No. 64 /2020 under relevant sections of law in Police Station Tral and initiated further investigations. (with inputs from PTI, KNO)
