Massive landslide blocks Sgr-Leh highway

16 shops, 2 houses razed to ground

Kangan: Two residential houses and a three story shopping complex comprising 16 shops were damaged after land caved in following a massive landslide in Kangan area of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district on Friday.
The incident left the Srinagar-Leh blocked and traffic remained suspended on the highway.
Reports and witnesses said that around 12 noon on Friday a massive landslide hit the shopping complex belonging to Ali Mohammad Mir and two residential houses belonging to Ghulam Hassan Mir and Ali Mohammad at Banibagh Kangan due to which property worth lakhs was destroyed.
Due to landslide, Srinagar-Leh road got also blocked and hundreds of vehicles remain stranded on either side of the highway.
Eyewitnesses said that a large number of trees were also destroyed in the landslide and some vehicles also came under the slide.
Immediately after the incident, the police and civil administration including Deputy Commissioner Ganderbal, SSP Ganderbal, SDM Kangan, SDPO Kangan and SHO Kangan reached the spot to assess the situation, reports said.
Sub-Divisional Magistrate Kangan, Hakim Tanvir said that earth caved in after there was a landslide in Banibagh area, 7 kilometers away from Kangan town. He said that 16 shops and 2 houses were damaged in the incident.
“Fortunately there was no loss of life in the incident,” he said adding that men and machinery have been pressed into service to clear the debris.
“We hope that road will be thrown open shortly as clearance of the road has alre3ady started,” he added.
SHO Kangan, Aftab Ahmad urged upon the people not to take journey along the road till the debris is cleared.
