Residents allege use of substandard material during construction
Anantnag: An under construction drainage being constructed through PMGSY has collapsed in Bonigam area of Kulgam district with people alleging that the contractor in connivance with the authorities resorted to the use of sub standard material.
Locals said that we were surprised when they saw the drain collapsed in the village which was constructed a day or two before.
They alleged that it is because that of sub standard material that was used during the construction due to which it collapsed within 48 hours.
The drain was crucial and it was constructed after repeated requests to the concerned authorities, however due to negligence by the officials and the contractor, the drain collapsed, said a local.
He said that officials have never visited the site and the contractor too did not bother to follow any required protocols.
Meanwhile, residents of Marhama area of Bijbehara area have also alleged that sub standard material is being used on HLD road constructed under the PMGSY.
Locals said that in dead of night mud was laid on the road instead of graded sub base (GSB) and have demanded investigation in this regard.
They said that the road is of vital importance but if such material is being used then it is better to leave the repair works.
Meanwhile, an official said that the construction work has been stopped after complaints were received.
He said that the issue will be investigated.
Meanwhile, Executive Engineer PMGSY Kulgam, Farooq Ahmad Mantoo, said that loaded tippers have crossed over the drain soon after it was constructed.
He said that the construction was barely ba few days old and it could not bear the extra stress and collapsed.
He said that contractor was already directed to reconstruct it so that locals won’t feel any problem.
