Sopore: After a spike in the number of COVID cases, the administration in north Kashmir’s Sopore town re-imposed the lockdown on Saturday.
All the shops and other business establishments remained closed in Sopore markets while public transport also remained off the roads, witnesses said.
They said that police and paramilitary troopers were deployed on the roads, adding that all the main roads in several areas of the town were sealed. The forces had erected concertina wires on various roads to enforce the lockdown.
The lockdown was re-imposed after spurt in the number of COVID cases, officials said, adding that the fresh lockdown is aimed to carry out a massive sanitation drive in markets and public places of Sopore town.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Baramulla, G N Itoo in a statement said that, “In view of yesterday’s 25 positive cases from service providers of Sopore market, it has become exceedingly imperative to go for a massive sanitation drive in whole markets and public places which is not possible while shops are open and vendors are on roads.”
“As agreed by stakeholders and in the larger interest of people, it is hereby ordered that there shall be complete lockdown enforcement in Sopore town from Saturday,” DC said.
