LAWDA demolition team faces stones, bricks as people turn violent

Srinagar: Police have to use a couple of tear-smoke shells after people mostly women tried to resist the demolition drive at Shanpora Habak area in Srinagar outskirts.
Reports said that a team from Lakes and Waterways Development Authority (LAWDA) assisted by local police carried a demolition drive in Shanpora Habak area of Hazratbal on Saturday.
An official said that they had received complaints that illegal structures are being raised in the area.
“Acting on the compliant, a team assisted by police was sent there, however over 40 people mostly women pelted stones on the team and tried to disrupt the demolition drive,” he said.
Police swung into action and fired couple of tear-smoke shells to disperse the mob, reports said.
“The demolition drive was still carried out and illegal structures were raised to ground,” the official added.
He said that the officials conducted the demolition drive in Habak Batapora, Teilbal, Braine, and Check Sadarbal.
“Five illegal constructions that include two single storey houses, two double storey houses and two gate pillars raised illegally were demolished on spot under the supervision of Enforcement Officer,” the official added.
An illegal construction belonging to some influential persons was sealed in presence of Secretary LAWDA, he added.
During the demolition drive there was stiff resistance from the miscreants in the area of Batapora Teilbal, stones were hurled on the demolition squad resulting in minor injuries to one police constable, he added.
