Woman killed in north Kashmir during LoC flare up

Baramulla/Poonch: A woman was killed and two other civilians were injured in an intense shelling from across the Line of Control (LoC) in Uri area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, officials said.
They said that a mortal shell hit the house of Akthar Begum, 40, wife of Zahoor Ahmad at Batha Gram village of Uri, killing her on the spot.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Baramulla, Abdul Qayoom confirmed the killing of the woman and said that two others were also injured, who have been evacuated to the hospital.
He said five families were evacuated safely to safer place and as a few vehicles and residential houses suffered damage during the shelling.
Earlier, a 35-year-old woman Parveena Begum wife Shabir Ahmad sheikh of Nambla suffered minor injuries and was shifted to SDH Uri for treatment, the official said.
SDM Uri Reyaz Ahmad Malik said that people fleeing from the LoC are being kept in Government Girls higher secondary school Uri.
“If needed, we will put others in the vacant Government Boys Higher Secondary School and NHPC Government quarters at Bandi Uri.
Notably, panic has gripped the residents of Charunda, Batgran, Hathlanga, Soura, Mothal, Balkote, Silikote, Thajal, Tilawari, Nambla and Balkote, reports and officials said.
Meanwhile, Defence spokesman in Srinagar, Rajesh Kalia said that today in the morning at 8:20 am, Pakistan initiated an unprovoked ceasefire violation along the LoC in Rampur sector of Uri in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district by firing mortars and other weapons. “Befitting response is being given,” he added.
Besides, LoC flare up in north Kashmir the troops posted on both sides of the fence in Poonch sector also exchanged heavy gunfire.
Pakistani troops shelled forward posts and villages along the Line of Control (LoC) in two sectors in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district in violation of the ceasefire agreement, officials said.
There have been unprovoked cross-border firing by Pakistani troops along the LoC for the fifth consecutive days, they said.
“At about 1615 hours today, Pak army initiated unprovoked ceasefire violation by firing with small arms and intense shelling with mortars along LoC in Kirni and Qasba sectors in district Poonch,” a defence PRO said.
The Indian Army is retaliating befittingly, he said.
On Thursday, an Army jawan was killed and a civilian injured when Pakistani troops heavily shelled villages and forward posts along the LoC in Rajouri and Poonch district.
Several houses were damaged in intense firing and mortar shelling by Pakistani troops on Wednesday. (with PTI, GNS and KNO inputs)
